Rethinking Holidays: Connection Over Consumerism

Community · · Amy Wesley

We are reimagining how we celebrate holidays to be more inclusive and less focused on consumerism. Learn about our approach to seasonal events.

As our society becomes more diverse, we are constantly asking ourselves: How can we ensure our spaces are truly inclusive for every family?

Moving Beyond "Themes"

Traditional educational settings often focus heavily on specific Euro-Western holidays (Christmas, Easter, etc.). While these are important to many, focusing solely on them can unintentionally exclude members of our community who do not observe them.

At Bella Vita, we are in a "middle space" where we are contemplating what works best for our unique context. We are moving away from consumer-driven holidays and towards celebrating connection, seasons, and feelings.

What does this look like?

Instead of spending a month making identical ornaments, we might focus on:

  • The Season: How does the world change in winter? What brings us comfort (light, warmth, food)?
  • Connection: Who do you spend time with? What special activities do you do with your family?
  • Feelings: How does a celebration make you feel?

This doesn't mean we ignore holidays. When children talk about events happening in their lives—whether it's Christmas, Diwali, or Hanukkah—we talk about them! We learn about them together. But our curriculum remains emergent, based on the children's interests, rather than prescriptive based on the calendar.

We believe that by focusing on the values behind the holidays—generosity, gratitude, and togetherness—we create a richer experience for everyone.
